Lençois and the Chapada Diamantina

Itinerary
Day 1
Early morning departure for Lençóis in private vehicle and
guide.
Early afternoon check in at check in at pousada.
Afternoon light trekking to the natural pools of the Serrano River.
From there it's a short walk to the nearby caves where ancient
rock is disintegrating into fine multi-colored sand. A refreshing
swim in the pool at the base of the Primavera waterfall completes
this afternoon's trip.
Day 2
A choice of:
- Highlights of the Chapada Diamantina
A full day tour taking in the most important sights and sites of the
Chapada Diamantina including:
- The stunning stalagmites and stalactites of the mysterious
Lapa Doce cave;
- The crystal clear water of the Pratinha subterranean lake;
- Pai Inacio Mountain for the definitive panoramic view of the
Chapada region and the best sunset in the region
- Pai Inacio - Lençóis ( hiking)
After breakfast a 20 minute transfer to the base of the Pai Inacio
mountain, a 20 minute climb to the top for wonderful views of the
region. Return to base to begin the 5 hour trek through the
valleys, along prospectors. trails. The hike is a constant lesson
in biology and botany, with opportunities for swim in the river and
pools along the way. The trail bring us back to lesson, entering the
town from a different direction, offering new views of the town and
valley.
Day 3
A choice of two excursions:
- Poço Encantado and Igatú :
A 2 hour drive to Poço Encantado (Enchanted Well) via the
colonial town of Andaraí, deep in the old diamond mining country.
The Poço Encantado is best seen in the months of April to August
when, during the morning hours, shafts of sunlight enter this hidden
crystal clear lake in a sunken cave and are dispersed through the
deep blue waters of the lake in a show of light, color, reflection
and refraction. Known locally as the 8th wonder of the world.
Later we have lunch Xique-Xique de Igatú, so-called after the tall,
distinctive xique-xique cacti of the region. This is a diamond
prospecting ghost town where the remnants of the abandoned stone
houses are still to be seen, the Bedrock City of the Chapada
Diamantina.
- Sossego Falls ( hiking )
Depart hotel after breakfast, tracing the Ribeirão River to
the Sossego Falls. We pass the Ribeirão do Meio natural pool and
rock slide and continue through the river canyon among the mammoth
boulders on the river bank and bed. There are numerous swimming
opportunities along the way.
Day 4
Morning free for further hiking in vicinity or just soak in the
atmosphere of the town. Check out and depart by Lençois airport for
flight to Salvador.
