Iguaçu Falls
Set in a magnificent subtropical humid forest, the Iguassu River
plunges and crashes in a series of tiered falls. The 275 falls are
over three kilometers wide and 80 meters high, which make them wider
than Victoria, higher than Niagara, and more beautiful than both.
Neither words nor photographs do them justice; they must be seen and
heard. The falls were a holy burial place for the Tupi-Guaraní and
Paraguas people thousands of years before they were "discovered" by
Europeans. In 1986, the international commission of UNESCO declared
the region a World Heritage site. You may very well see variations
in the spelling of the name of the falls. In Brazil, it's Iguaçu;
in Argentina, Iguazú; and in Paraguay, Iguassu.
Please note: Bring sturdy walking shoes and rain
gear.
Itinerary
Day 01
Met ao arrival at Foz do Iguaçu Airport and transfer to the
wonderfully located Hotel das Cataratas deep inside the Iguaçu
National Park. The falls are just a short walk from the hotel. Time
to enjoy the Brazilian side of the falls before sunset
Day 2:
Travel to the Argentinean side of the falls for a walk along a
series of catwalks over the falls to the famed "Devil's Throat"
which some consider to be the best view of the falls.
We then take to a narrow dirt road in jeeps inside the 67,000 acres
of National Park forest with 2,000 varieties of plants. During the
trip you will see, bromelias, orchids, lianas, philodendron, fungus,
and noble trees. After the 2 mile drive it.s a 600-meter walking
trek, passing by the picturesque Macuco Falls, to the end of the
trail at the banks of the Iguaçu River. Here you will board a
twin-engine boat specially designed for this river's sailing
conditions. Cruise into the Iguassu Canyon, shooting several rapids
and arrive at the very base of the majestic waterfalls. As the
experienced pilot maneuvers in the mist of the falls themselves, you
will have a completely different view of the fabulous Iguassu Falls.
On the way back to the hotel, visit the Bird Park, which is set in
17 hectares of unspoiled subtropical forest. Visitors follow a path
for 800 meters through the forest passing through some of the
largest aviaries, where the birds fly free, and can be studied and
photographed without the restriction of netting and cages. Then
transfer to your hotel for dinner and overnight. (B, L, D; Hotel Das
